Unit 1- Business Purposes
The aim of this unit is to enable you to understand the nature of business organisations and the business environment in which they operate. You will do this by looking at the range of organisations that exist locally, regionally and nationally and by considering the business framework in which they operate. There will be a particular focus on businesses in the local context with which you will be familiar.

Task 1
You have been asked to produce a small report by the Local Chambers of Commerce, on the business activity on Hong Kong Island.
P1 & P2 – Complete a powerpoint presentation on 4 differing businesses on HK Island which includes the following:
1. Business name and description of business
2. Ownership type
3. Purpose of the business
4. Size of the business (small, medium, large)
5. Scale (local, national, international)
6. Classification (primary, secondary, tertiary) (P3 Part)
7. Their impact on the local economy

M1 Using two of the business above (choose two that are opposite i.e. PLC/Government). Outline the similarities and differences between the two businesses. Ensure that you use the categories in P1 to outline these.

2. Technology (website, smartphones, apps)
3. Locations (out of town shopping/car usage)

Task 3
P4 You have been commissioned by the Southern District Council to investigate what can be done to local and national Government to improve the local economy. You need to recognise the role of government in establishing the business climate through the use of incentives to business such as cutting the business rates of tax or through regional development policies.
Regional and local government also have business generation at the heart of what they do in promoting local economic wellbeing and there are plentiful illustrations of how they create business micro environments.
Research the local and regional government in 1 country (does not have to be HK) in preparation to present your findings. You may also want to give your opinions on the following possible incentives.
This may help for those who choose to do the UK.
P5 – As part of your research for the Southern District Council you have been requested to provide advice to a possible expatriate looking to move to Hong Kong.
Maria Bancini is 30, lives in Albufeira, Portugal and speaks fluent Cantonese and English. She runs a thriving Portuguese restaurant and three years ago she married an Englishman, Tom. Tom works in banking and his company are placing him in Hong Kong. Tom needs help to persuade Maria to move to Hong Kong. You are a business advisor, living in HK.
1) Find 6 reasons why HK is a good place to do business
2) Investigate the characteristics of the business environment in your own area. This means identifying the range (Small / Medium / Large) and types of businesses (sole trader/partnerships/PLC/ Private) that operate there, the types of markets they serve (next slide), trends in those markets and which sectors of industry are growing / declining.
3) Carry out a regulations checklist on the SUCCESS website to identify examples of the laws or regulations Maria must comply with as a restaurant owner.
4) On your own prepare a convincing argument why Maria should relocate to your region, include an explanation of the characteristics of your local business environment. Then email her.
5) Present your ideas to your group, you can then vote on which person would be most likely to persuade Maria to leave Portugal.

Unit 2- Business Organisations
The aim of this unit is to enable you to understand the aims and objectives of business organisations and how they are organised into functional areas to meet their business aims and objectives. You will do this by looking at examples of local and national organisations for which information is readily available. There will be a particular focus on businesses in the local context with which you will be familiar.

Task 1
Knowing that you are taking a business qualification at South Island School you have been approached by several friends who would like you to help with the setting up of their businesses. One of your friends is thinking of setting up a small restaurant in a nearby village. The setting is attractive. The restaurant will cater for a maximum of 36 customers and will serve gourmet food. Another friend wants to create a small charity that supports unwanted and abandoned animals.
P1– Define aims and objectives give an example for the private sector and the public sector.
P2 - describe the purpose of business setting aims and objectives. You also need to include the benefits to business owners of setting SMART objectives.
P3- Identify your own personal SMART targets (Smart target personal worksheet). Then, consider two or three aims that would be appropriate for the gourmet food restaurant and write some objectives for each aim.
M1 – Using the businesses for P1, compare the aims and objectives of the businesses. Ensure you choose contrasting organisations i.e. Sole trader vs PLC; Ltd vs Cooperative; PLC vs Government and LTD vs Charity.
D1. Using an example provided in class, evaluate whether the business is meeting its aims and objectives. You need to find evidence to prove and disprove these claims.
