ESF 6-a-side Tournament - SHIELD WINNERS
Friendly 1
WIS: 02/11/14
South Island School B Grade football team took on WIS in a friendly game just weeks from the start of the HKSSF group stages.
SIS travelled with a 15-strong squad to Happy Valley and fielded a starting XI of equal year 10s and 11s in a 3-5-2 formation.
SIS started strongly playing some controlled, possession football without really troubling the WIS keeper. After 15 minutes WIS started to dominate and deservedly took the lead, the WIS forward evading 3 challenges before calmly slotting the ball in at the near post.
WIS nearly doubled their lead before half- time with a long range effort that had Will Donker beaten but fortunately came back off the upright.
The second half started much stronger with SIS able to cut through the defence with regular ease, Leo Kim and Howard Corrall making dangerous runs in behind with Luca Klardie and Monty Higgins playing some delightful through-balls.
SIS deservedly got their equaliser 10 minutes into the second half, after a short corner routine right off the training ground resulted in Tom Lipton looping a header into the far corner after great work from Klardie and Corrall. (SIS 1-1 WIS, 40 mins)
The goal rocked the WIS team who nearly conceded a second moments later, Leo Kim forcing a wonderful save at the near post from a powerful driven effort after great work by Ku.
From the resulting corner SIS did take a deserving lead with a carbon-copy goal. Corrall and Klardie again working the corner short with the latter floating a delightful ball to the back post where Lipton had peeled-off,unchallenged to head SIS into the lead (SIS 2-1 WIS, 45 mins).
WIS continued to pressure and looked dangerous on the counter attack with the excellent Lipton and Parker marshalling the defence impeccably, the latter making several last-ditch tackles to prevent goal-scoring opportunities. Will Donker, the sweeper-keeper, organised the back-3 well with SIS looking a strong, defensive unit.
With 5 minutes to go SIS nearly extended their lead after some beautiful 1-touch football from Parker & Klardie played Corrall through on goal but his cross-come-shot rolled agonisingly wide at the back post with nobody there to convert.

1st Game - SIS vs HKIS
A few enforced changes had to be made to the starting XI. Paul can no longer compete at B-Grade level having competed in cross country for the A-Grade just 2 days prior, we will miss his energy and strength in this holding midfield position. Andi will step in from the start in a straight swap.
2nd Game - SIS vs St Joseph's
**A few changes had to be enforced here with James coming into the centre of midfield, Monty moving out to the right of midfield and Ronan into left-back.
SIS took on a St Joseph's side having both lost their first matches by a single goal. St Joseph's took an early lead against the run of play after a long throw into the box deflected off an SIS head and looped over keeper Donker and into the far corner. 0-1
SIS continued to play some attractive football in search for an equaliser and fashioned some excellent opportunities that were not taken by Leo, Howard and Inigo. However, SIS were playing by far the better football and carving out chance after chance and deservedly equalised when Ronan's cross from the right rebounded off the crossbar and was turned in nicely by Inigo on his left foot. 1-1
Moments later SIS had taken the lead when Luca Klardie scored the goal of the game with a 25 yard thunderbolt that lobbed the keeper and gave SIS a deserved lead. 2-1
SIS soon scored a third after a lovely cross-field ball by Charlie found Leo in space and he stuck it away on the second occasion again with a nice left-footed finish. 3-1 HALF TIME.
St Joseph's started the second half a lot brighter and threatened to make a game of it but were limited in their chances by a strong, resolute SIS rear-guard with Tom, Mateo and Charlie looking imperious. SIS continued to pour forward and scored a fourth after 35 minutes, after some neat interplay involving Howard, Luca and Inigo the move was finished off beautifully by Leo with a cute, curling effort into the top corner. 4-1
It was soon 5 after some strong hold up play from Inigo releasing Ronan on the right who beat his man, cut inside and unleashed a powerful drive across goal and into the far corner, a terrific goal. 5-1
The game was already over but there was still time for SIS to score a fifth and for Leo to complete his hat-trick with a beautiful flowing move finished with a neat right footed volley back across goal into the top corner. 6-1
This was some of the best football that I have seen any SIS team play, or any B grade team for that matter. Some beautiful passing football, working for each other, choosing the correct options and finishing any opportunities.
MVP could have gone to any single player on the pitch, you were all superb, it really was impossible to pick but thanks to your help we have gone for Ronan O'Meara.
Next up, KGV on Sunday. Back on the So Kon Po pitch which does not lend itself for our passing game, never-the-less a win is required if we wish to get through this group, well done today but it means nothing unless we can beat KGV.
