Unit 19- Developing Teams in Leadership
People working together in teams, this can benefit organisations greatly and help them to achieve their goals. A motivated workforce is more likely to be efficient and can contribute to the long-term profitability of the business. If team members cooperate, they can inspire each other. This helps the team to solve problems and identifies the individual skills within the team. The work can be allocated within the team so that the complementary skills of team members can be used to best effect. A team is a group of people working together to achieve common objectives, willing to commit to ensuring that the team objectives are achieved. In this unit you will explore the benefits of team development and team working. You will examine the skills required by different team members and how an effective team leader can motivate and develop individuals within teams. Sometimes when people work in teams, they have their own types of communication, which can affect others and cause conflict or tension. In this unit you will be able to demonstrate your own team working abilities, identifying the strengths you can bring to team activities and recognise the skills that could be developed.
Aims of this unit:
1 Know the importance of teams
2 Understand team development
3 Understand leadership attributes and skills
4 Be able to work effectively in a team.

Unit 9- Creative Product Promotion
The promotional side of marketing is probably the one most people are familiar with. We are exposed to marketing communications many times every day and they have become part of our environment. Within the marketing mix, the promotional aspects are concerned with this communication between the customer and the producer. This unit introduces you to the basic concepts which are applied in the promotions industry. Effective marketing communication and promotion depend on the understanding of customer behaviour, as well as being able to design promotional campaigns to achieve certain long or short term business objectives. Modern information and communications technologies have had, and continue to have, a huge impact on this aspect of marketing and you will explore current promotional campaigns, using some of the concepts included in this unit. You will have the opportunity to consider different ways of promoting products, introducing the promotional mix at a simple level. The role of advertising agencies and the media is also explored, along with the role of the internet. The choice of media, message and methods, in relation to objectives and constraints, is examined. You will apply the theory by designing a promotional campaign for a selected product to meet the needs of a given campaign or creative brief. This unit gives you the opportunity to view familiar images and experiences through informed and analytical eyes.
Aims of the unit:
1 Know the constituents of the promotional mix
2 Understand the role of promotion within the marketing mix
3 Understand the role of advertising agencies and the media
4 Be able to create a simple promotional campaign.

Assignment 1 (P1, P2, M1, D1)
"Know the Constituents of the Promotional Mix"
Scenario
Ngong Ping 360 is a subsidiary of the MTR Corporation. They operate a 5.7km cable car trip between Tung Chung Town Centre and Ngong Ping. In order to revitalize their Promotional Campaign, they have asked for your help. During this unit you will research and evaluate other promotional campaigns and consider the use of using outside advertising campaigns before evaluating Ngong Ping 360’s existing campaign. You will then devise a promotional campaign for Ngong Ping 360.
Your contact, Trish, at Ngong Ping 360 is interested in your opinion on other successful promotional campaigns and has asked you to research and report back on the promotion at popular attractions, Disney Land and Ocean Park.
You must collect evidence of the different types of promotion used by the two organisations and consider the reasons behind this choice of promotion and whether you feel that it is effective in its objectives.
Task 1
Create a presentation to share with your class. This should be based on the investigation you conducted into Disney Land and Ocean Park. In your presentation include;
- A description in your own words what you understand by the promotional mix. (P1)
- Examples of the promotions used by Ocean Park and Disney to promote their products (P1) The following all need to be covered:
Element of marketing mix; advertising; personal selling; sales promotion; public relations; direct marketing; sponsorships; purpose and objectives of promotion mix; need to support desired corporate image.
- Explain the role of promotion within the marketing mix for a selected product / service (P2)
This should be connected to the promotion of a selected product as part of the application of the marketing mix, here you can look at how organisations select price points, highlight product quality or secure appropriate placement. Also, you can look at strap-lines, colours, logos, links between and method and the product and then explain how it links with website, shop etc. to make the company successful.
- Explain the marketing aims for the two products/organisations (M1)
- A description of the promotional mix for your chosen products. (M1)
In other words you need to describe how through promotion they meet the extended marketing mix for both businesses.
Products and services: product range; new product development; product and market trials; quality; quantity;
timing; product features and variations (unique selling points); associated services and benefits; style
Price: importance; factors affecting price; pricing strategies
Place: online and/or physical presence; retail; wholesale; direct selling; role of intermediaries (push and pull)
Packaging: eg appearance, message, distinctiveness, appropriateness, functionality, integration in mix
People: importance particularly in services; training and development; consistency of image
Processes: importance in creating/maintaining positive image
Physical evidence: eg colour, sound, tone of voice, language, image, light.
- Is there a theme in the promotional mix? Does this fit with the overall marketing mix? How? (M1)
Task 2
By now you should have a good idea about various different methods that a business can use in their promotional mix. What do you really think about the effectiveness of the campaigns you have seen? Use one of Ocean Park’s campaigns and produce an evaluation of their promotional campaign, in class we will focus on the Halloween Fest.
D1 evaluate and justify the use of an appropriate promotional mix in relation to marketing objectives for Ocean Park. Evaluation is about considering the advantages and disadvantages of the decisions that were made and drawing your own conclusions as a result of this analysis. To pass D1 you will need to provide a detailed justification for each decision you discussed in task 1 as well as suggestions as to how you could improve the campaign under different circumstances e.g. with a larger budget, longer timescale, was the campaign worth the effort and expense?
You should also demonstrate some idea of expected gains in product sales or service uptake resulting from the promotional campaign. You should balance this against approximate costs so that the project may be evaluated as a success or failure.
Tips
Get into the mind of the marketing team. Why did they choose each method and the way they did it?
1. Is each part successful? Is there evidence it is successful, or not? If so quote and reference the evidence. If there isn’t, what do you think? And justify (say why you think that.) you can link it to other companies that have done similar things and been successful or not with this technique. You should have some idea of expected gains in product sales or service uptake resulting from their campaign
2. Look at the areas they are not good at i.e. Things they don’t do or things you have said were not successful. How could they improve these things they do to make them more successful e.g Emirates might want to sponsor a more successful football team because this would make them appear a successful company. Vodaphone are spending a lot of money £100’s millions to sponsor F1 cars with little payback now they are well known. Perhaps they could spend less money and target it in areas they are not so well known in.
Look at areas they don’t cover e.g. celebrity endorsement and suggest how they could do it successfully.
e.g. Haribo could have a top sportsperson (e.g. Mo Farah) in their adverts because that would suggest that they give the sort of energy that is required to run long distances.

"Using Outside Agencies"
Scenario
Trish at Ngong Ping 360 has heard about Advertising Agencies and has asked your advice on the benefits of using them. You have decided to put together a brochure for Trish to keep and share with the rest of her team.
You can use the links below to research some examples of agencies.
Task 1 – Prepare the brochure
To do this, you will need to research the services they provide. Your brochure will be organized into several sections.
The role of agencies
Explain the services agencies can offer (such as media planning, advertisement design and copywriting) and outline the cost considerations when compared to in-house promotion. (P3)
Media types
Explain the different media in which agencies can place advertising material. (P3)
Criteria for selecting media
Explain how agencies can advise businesses on which media to select to run advertising campaigns. Consider criteria such as cost versus coverage and ability to meet promotional objectives. (P3)
The impact of new media and the role of the internet
Explain how your agency can use new media to promote their client’s products. Consider here the role of the internet, the impact of disintermediation, direct marketing and one-to-one communication campaigns. (P3)
Where appropriate include examples from successful campaigns (such as the ones listed above or ones from your own choice) to illustrate the points you are making. (P3)
Task 2
In order to make sure that Trish and her team are fully aware of all of the different types of media available to use in a promotional campaign, you have decided to add a section to your brochure which will identify these.
Choose a successful promotional campaign and identify all of the types of promotion used. For each form of promotion, explain the reasons behind that choice of media. (P4)
Task 3
Some of your clients will be unsure of whether it is worth using an advertising agency as they will believe that doing their campaign in-house will be more cost effective.
To help your customers to make this decision with the full facts, add a comparison table to your brochure to explain the advantages and disadvantages of using outside agencies. (M2)

- Promotional plan (P5)
Task 2
Your promotional plan should be suitable for both the organization and the target audience. You should therefore be able to fully justify why you have made the choices you have made in your promotional campaign.
Prepare a rationale to deliver as part of your presentation justifying the choices that you have made in your campaign. (M3)
Task 3
Trish is very happy and excited with the campaign that you have devised. She is realistic though and would like to know your opinions of previous promotional campaigns.

Unit 4- Business Communication
The aim of this unit is to show you how the collection and management of business information, and the successful communication of that information through a business, is critical for the future prosperity of an organisation.
A business needs accurate and relevant information from internal and external sources in order to operate profitably. Proper collection of data creates an environment where informed decisions can be taken for the benefit of the business. In order to manage information effectively, there must be good communication systems within the organisation. Staff must possess good verbal and written skills in order to communicate and share information Business information can be used to obtain competitive advantage and promote efficiency.
